Power Tools Buyer's Guide - How to Get the Best Deals In Power Tools

If you're a handyman looking to boost his performance, a do-it-yourself enthusiast wanting to expand his range, or a home owner who's decided to start doing jobs around the house, you'll need the right power tools to get things done. Using the right power tools and accessories such as saws, drills and drill bits is essential for safe, fast and effective work. Here's your guide to getting the best deals.

First, let's look at the 'must have' power tools you'll need to get. The two major tools are saws and drills.

Saws are essential cutting tools for everything from wood to metal and concrete blocks. To handle such an array of tasks, saws come in several different types. The type of saw or saws you'll want depends on a range of factors including the material you're cutting, how precise the cut needs to be, and whether you're cutting a straight line or a curve.

For general use, get a reciprocating saw. This can hack its way through wood, drywall, pipes, and vinyl and aluminum siding among others.

If you're mainly involved in woodworking, get a mitre saw. These are perfect for carrying out angle cuts for window and door mouldings and picture frames.

For more elaborate design work, get a jigaws. Also known as a saber this is the perfect implement for cutting holes or curves in thin metals, plastics, wood moldings and plywood.

One real workhorse is the bench saw or table saw. If you need one major woodworking implement, this is it. It consists of a circular blade driven by an electric motor. A portable version exists in the form of a circular saw.

The next key power tool is the drill which also come in different types. For example, angle drills have a main body angled at 90 degrees to the chuck so that they can work in confined spaces.

One major consideration is the power you'll need as this determines the voltage of the drill. For ordinary use a 12 to 14 volt implement is fine. Power users and contractors will need more, perhaps 14 to 18 volts.

When using drills, having the right drill bits is critical as different materials require the right bits. Twist bits are the most usual kind as they can work with wood, metal and plastic. However they can only form small holes and may be brittle. Flat wood drill bits are the type when you want to drill large, flat-bottomed holes. Masonry bits are especially made to drill holes in bricks, tiles, stone and concrete. Tile bits feature a ground tungsten carbide tip which makes it ideal for use with glass materials and ceramic tiles.

When it comes to shopping for tools, here are some things to remember.

Look for power tools with variable speed settings. These offer far more versatility than those with fixed settings.

Another major consideration is whether to get cord or cordless. Cordless drills, for example, are extremely flexible allowing you work anywhere in your home. You can also use a rechargeable drill in places where there's no electrical power supply available.

Buy the top brand names. The top companies didn't acquire their reputations easily. It took an extended period of offering quality products with quality service at competitive prices. When you buy leading brands, you can be sure you're getting a top notch product. You'll also get a rock-solid warranty in case there are any problems.

When you've acquired the basics of saws and drills, you can look into getting other types of power tools. You have a huge choice of implements to enhance and extend your work, whatever kind of jobs you do. These include sanders, planers, along with tools to use outside such as chainsaws. It's true to say that whatever job you need to do around the home, there's a power tool to help you do it easily.

  1. Lunette says:

This is the worst product I have ever purchased anywhere. It is my fault, should have known by the price! The first time I turned it on it chipped the blade and locked up (I have used planers since 1981) so it was not set up wrong. It cost too much to ship back so I was stuck!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Anonymous says:

Like the other customer, I bought this without seeing a review and I am sorry I wasted my money on this piece of junk. The “adjustment” knob doesn’t adjust anything and the instruction manual seems to have been writen by someone who didn’t speak English as a first– or even a second–language. This product’s only advantage, if you can call it that, is the fact that this planer is cheap. It does it’s job, but not as well as a more expensive planer could do.

Keep away from this tool. Save your money for a better planer.

  3. Hakan says:

When I ordered this planer. No other reviews had been posted. I only needed to trim up a couple of doors. The product arrived in substandard packaging, the knob adjusting the front depth does not work, so it will not cut wood at all. The instructions are faded, and in broken english – useless.
